Why Donate a Car?

Having a car can bring a person a lot of joy and convenience, at least until it starts breaking down from being too old. When this happens a person can try either refurbishing the vehicle or selling it. If they go the refurbishing route, they may have to pay thousands of dollars if they don't have the knowledge to do what is necessary on their own. On the other hand, selling the vehicle may be almost impossible if it has been deemed as being too outdated. This leaves only one alternative: vehicle donation.

Many people cringe at the thought of donating something as expensive as a car. It doesn't matter that the car is aged or that the car isn't providing them much value as it used to. What matters is the thought that at one time thousands of dollars had to be spent in order to acquire the vehicle. However, it is best to let go of this type of thinking. This is because vehicle donation offers many benefits both for the individual and their community.

On an individual level, vehicle donation frees a person from the general responsibility associated with owning a car. Expenses associated with auto insurance or tag registration are eliminated with vehicle donation. Car owners also don't have to worry about the vehicle taking up extra space in their garage or on their driveway.

Additionally, car owners may be eligible for a tax deduction if they decide to donate their car. The exact amount of the deduction will depend on the car's blue book value. This can be a few hundred to a few thousand, depending on the car's make, model and age. Of course, the blue book value will almost never be equal to the purchase amount, but it can still offer a person generous compensation. Besides, most car owners know that once their car is driven off of the lot, depreciation will keep them from ever recovering all of their investment. The only exception is through a private sale, but that's only if someone is willing to buy an old car at such a high price, (a scenario that is unlikely).

On a community level, vehicle donations can help invaluable organizations better conduct their business. This happens because the organization receiving the car will refurbish it, then use the vehicle to transport people or goods to and from the company. What are the types of organizations that would do this? Schools, churches, charities and even 'regular' businesses are a few examples of enterprises that regularly make use of refurbished donated cars.

If an organization cannot refurbish the donated car, they may sell it at an auction. The companies receiving the car may then refurbish it themselves and turn around and sell the car again to individuals at significantly discounted prices. Or, an organization may decide to sell it to manufacturers who will make sure of the vehicle's parts. Regardless, the money used from these sales can be a great aide to all of the organizations involved. This is especially the case for non-profit organizations, which don't often get access to many opportunities allowing them to earn extra money.

In conclusion, car donation offers many benefits both for the car owner themselves and for society as a whole. Indeed, car owners should seriously think about these benefits the next time they forego the opportunity for car donation. If they decide not to donate their cars, what good is the vehicle going to do for anyone? At least car donation allows various organizations (many of which are integral for social development in a community), a chance to revive a vehicle's life and overall purpose.
